| Some History |
| The British Business Club (BBC) started life back in 1998. It was started because a few business people who lived and worked in Moscow, wanted a forum to discuss and share information concerning their activities here in Russia. A lot of the discussions were about life and business activities alien to the British norm, and today the same can be said about what happens at BBC meetings. |
| It has always been a goal of the BBC to be an open and un-restrictive place to meet and talk. The whole idea is to allow a free and uninhibited forum for business people to meet, talk and find common ground. Sometimes this interaction can lead to business. Generally we would like to hope that at least it leads to a better understanding of who is in the market place and what services are available, but always it leads to a friendly and social time once a month. |
| Since 1998, when we would meet in offices and bars on a somewhat ad-hoc basis, we have built it up to a stable and regular meeting schedule on the last Thursday of each month. |
| What We Do |
| Primarily we give a place for everyone to meet and talk, without restriction. We generally keep to an English language base, but we do have a good number of Russian companies and members attending who carry on their debates in Russian too. |
| We also try to make a number of interesting and fun activities during the year. We hold a Boat Trip, we participate with St. Andrew’s Church and organise a traditional Village Fete. Being the British Club, we mark St. David's Day, St. George’s Day, and St. Andrews Day with a special event that month. We also organise a large Charity Ball in October. The BBC participates with other clubs and holds joint events to help introduce people and companies from other countries. |
| The Organisation |
| The BBC is a voluntary organisation. Currently it is managed by a group of 6 “Board Members” and has an excellent group of helpers and organizers who do everything from letting people know what is happening to actually getting product and venues arranged for the meetings. The meetings are paid for through an amalgamation of sponsor donations in cash (or by Bank transfer); direct supply of product for the meetings such as wine; beer, food and raffle prizes and individual member donations. |
| The BBC has its own web site [http://www.britishclub.ru] which it uses to promote its sponsors and give our general information about the club and other interesting items. The club also has its own mail server and provides a free Web-Mail and POP3 account service to all sponsors and members who wish to use it. |
| Although the BBC does not lobby or provide commercial activities by itself, the BBC does have very good contacts throughout the business and administrative bodies in Moscow and it can always point someone in the right direction for advice and support. |
| Who Are Members |
| We have a large diverse group of members in the BBC. In 2007 there were 495 different companies represented in the club. Of these companies about 30% were Russian owned and managed. |
